Ophiolatry Releases Harrowing New Video for “Jesus Complex”
Brazilian death metal veterans Ophiolatry have returned with a scathing new video for “Jesus Complex,” the second single from their upcoming album Serpent’s Verdict, due out June 6, 2025 via WormHoleDeath Records. Following their April single “Death Tour,” this latest release digs even deeper into the band’s ritualistic, confrontational aesthetic.
A Dystopian Vision of Faith and Control
With “Jesus Complex,” Ophiolatry offers a visceral critique of religious indoctrination and spiritual conformity. The video unfolds a haunting narrative: a man wakes to find everyone around him—strangers, neighbors, even his reflection—wearing the same emotionless Jesus mask. It’s a metaphor for the suffocating pressure of imposed belief systems and the psychological toll of losing one’s identity in the face of unquestioned doctrine.
“This story is totally terrifying,” the band explains. “You wake up, go out, and discover everyone is wearing a Jesus mask… It becomes even more suffocating when you look in the mirror and see that you are too.”
Musical Evolution with Ritualistic Undertones
“Jesus Complex” blends Ophiolatry’s trademark technical death metal precision with new sonic elements—tribal rhythms, layered atmospherics, and dissonant textures—that build on the band’s legacy while pushing their sound forward. Compared to their last full-length, Transmutation (2008), the new material reflects a shift toward more immersive, cinematic arrangements. This is a band that hasn’t just evolved—they’ve sharpened their edges and deepened their intent.
Metal Injection recently noted that “Ophiolatry’s return feels less like a comeback and more like an exorcism… a precise, furious purge wrapped in myth and menace.” Their creative process on Serpent’s Verdict is described by the band as a “communion between sound and image,” designed to unfold as a ritual in multiple chapters—each track with its own visual and thematic layer.
